Arugam Bay: A Hidden Gem on Sri Lanka’s East Coast

Located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is a charming coastal town that has been gaining popularity among tourists in recent years. Known for its beautiful beaches, surfing, and laid-back atmosphere, Arugam Bay is a great destination for those looking to escape the crowds and experience a more authentic side of Sri Lanka.

One of the main draws of Arugam Bay is its world-class surf breaks. The town is home to some of the best waves in the world, including the famous Main Point and Elephant Rock breaks. The surf season runs from May to November, with the biggest swells typically arriving in June and July. If you’re not a surfer, don’t worry – there are plenty of other things to do in Arugam Bay.
One of the best things about Arugam Bay is its relaxed atmosphere. The town has a distinctly bohemian feel, with lots of small guesthouses, cafes, and bars scattered along the beach. There’s no shortage of good food in Arugam Bay, with a wide variety of local and international cuisine on offer.

    Arugam Bay – Surfing

For those interested in exploring the local culture, there are a number of temples and other historic sites in the area. One of the most impressive is the ancient Buddhist temple of Kudumbigala, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. The temple is located about 20 kilometers inland from Arugam Bay and is well worth a visit.

If you’re looking to get off the beaten path, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure in Arugam Bay. You can take a boat ride along the nearby Kumana National Park, where you can spot a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, crocodiles, and monkeys. You can also go on a safari to Yala National Park, which is home to the highest concentration of leopards in the world.
Overall, Arugam Bay is a hidden gem on Sri Lanka’s east coast. With its beautiful beaches, world-class surf, and laid-back atmosphere, it’s a great destination for anyone looking to escape the crowds and experience a more authentic side of Sri Lanka. Whether you’re a surfer, a foodie, or an adventurer, there’s something for everyone in Arugam Bay.
