Looking for a getaway in a dry climate but unsure of where to go? Look no further than Dolos Dhas Rata, also known as Hambantota. This destination is brimming with history, nature, and adventure, with its beautiful seaside, dense jungles, and rich historical sites offering a plethora of activities to enjoy.

Hambantota, part of the traditional South region and known as Ruhuna, is famous for its paddy cultivation and boasts one of the strongest irrigation systems in Sri Lanka, a testament to its rich history and civilization.

One of the main highlights of Hambantota is its port, the second-largest in Sri Lanka after the Colombo port and an inland port that sits strategically along the key shipping route connecting Asia and Europe. With a capacity to berth 33 vessels at a time, the Hambantota port offers a unique view of deer and peacocks roaming around, making it the only port in the world with such natural beauty.

In addition to its attractions, Hambantota also boasts modern infrastructure including the renowned Shangri-La, a five-star hotel, Magampura Port, Mattala Airport, Southern Expressway, hospitals, and a cricket stadium, ensuring that visitors have access to all necessary amenities during their stay.

    Ramba Viharaya

When it comes to attractions, Hambantota has plenty to offer. The Ramba Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple dating back to the Polonnaruwa era and bears evidence of the Chola invasion, showcasing the historical significance of the region. The Mirijjawila Botanical Garden, one of the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts looking to explore the biodiversity of the dry zone.

    Bundala National Park

For adventure seekers, the Bundala National Park is ideal for birdwatching, with its diverse range of reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals, and flora, including migratory birds such as flamingos. Designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, Bundala National Park is a haven for nature lovers.

    Rekawa Beach

Visitors can also indulge in the healing properties of the Madunagala Hot Spring, believed to have medicinal benefits for skin diseases. The Rekawa Beach, a small fishery village between Hambantota and Tangalle, is a breeding ground for turtles, offering a unique opportunity to observe turtle conservation efforts, including the hatching of baby turtles.

Activities abound in Hambantota, from safari rides in the national parks to birdwatching, turtle conservation, and enjoying a game of cricket at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

    Tips for visitors

As Hambantota has a dry climate, packing essentials include sunglasses for comfortable sightseeing, lightweight cotton clothes to beat the heat, walking shoes for hiking, a water bottle to stay hydrated, and necessary travel documents and emergency contact numbers. With everything it has to offer, Hambantota welcomes all visitors for an unforgettable experience.
